A case of thrombotic meningoencephalitis (TME) caused by Haemophilus s
omnus was documented in a beef calf from a small feeder operation in N
ew York State in late fall 1993. The calf was found down without previ
ous signs of illness and was examined by a clinician from Cornell's Am
bulatory Clinic. The diagnosis was made based on gross and histopathol
ogic findings including specific immunoperoxidase staining of brain an
d lung tissue. Making the diagnosis is the key to management.
