Although valuable initial information can be gathered about transforma
tion from in vitro studies, human cancer occurs in the context of a co
mplex interaction with its environment and must ultimately be studied
in living animals. Transgenic animal models have been used to study br
east transformation for a number of years and have yielded valuable in
formation on the subject. In this paper, we will summarize results fro
m our laboratories, and others, regarding the use of transgenic mice t
o study breast tumorigenesis. We will also suggest future directions f
or the use of transgenic models to understand, and hopefully, one day
to cure the disease.
