Measurements of fringe visibility made with a stellar interferometer a
re significantly affected by wave-front distortions caused by turbulen
ce in the Earth's atmosphere. In this paper the temporal coherence of
the wave-front distortion and the effect of the observational sampling
time on fringe visibility measurements are discussed. A method for me
asuring the atmospheric coherence time, which is now in routine use in
the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI), is described and
some observational results are presented.
