M. Sablatash et T. Cooklev, COMPRESSION OF HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO SIGNALS, INCLUDING RECENT METHODS USING WAVELET PACKETS, Digital signal processing, 6(2), 1996, pp. 96-107
Reasons for the importance of compression of high-quality audio are ad
vanced. Audio signal analog-to-digital conversion is summarized. Human
perception and auditory modeling are briefly discussed. Signal quanti
zation and block processing are concisely presented. Adaptive transfor
m coding, subband coding, and time domain aliasing cancellation are su
ccinctly reviewed. Advanced physical modeling compression methods, per
ceptually based algorithms, and MUSICAM are compactly described. Sever
al recent proposals are discussed, and the most promising and effectiv
e of these, based on adaptive wavelet packets, is described. Performan
ces of many of the techniques are given to provide comparisons. Resear
ch directions to enable improvement of the present state of the art ar
e provided. It is to be noted that approaches employing adapted wavele
t packets show particularly outstanding promise. (C) 1996 Academic Pre
