Fever, vesicles around the mouth that are characteristic of herpes sim
plex virus infection, and blurred vision in the right eye developed co
ncurrently in a 62-year-old woman. Intracameral and intravitreal cells
were found in the right eye. These lesions did not respond to antibac
terial antibiotics, but they resolved after treatment with acyclovir.
The serum titers for herpes simplex virus type-1 were elevated. No cor
neal ulceration or stromal opacity was found. Herpetic uveitis that is
not associated with significant corneal disease, as was found in the
patient, may be uncommon.
