Ar. Caputo et al., CORNEAL LESIONS SECONDARY TO RETAINED FOREIGN-BODIES IN THE CONJUNCTIVAL FORNIX, Annals of ophthalmology. Glaucoma, 28(2), 1996, pp. 114-117
Causes of corneal ulceration include infectious agents and trauma. Ret
ained foreign bodies in the conjunctival fornix can traumatize and sig
nificantly compromise the integrity of the corneal epithelium and caus
e corneal ulceration. Patients who present with a corneal lesion in th
e eye must be given a full eye examination, including direct inspectio
n of conjunctival fornix (conjunctival cul-de-sac) by eversion of the
upper eyelid. This is a report of three cases of corneal abrasion with
resultant ulceration caused by retained occult foreign bodies in the
conjunctival fornix.
