The effect of calcium chloride at salt mole fractions from 0.02 to sat
uration on the vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) of l-propanol + water ha
s been studied at 101.32 kPa using a modified Othmer equilibrium still
. The salt exhibited a salting-out effect of the alcohol over the whol
e range of liquid composition, the azeotrope being eliminated at salt
mole fractions greater than 0.080. A liquid phase splitting into two i
mmiscible liquid phases on the whole range of salt concentration and o
ver a liquid range of about 0.01-0.54 l-propanol mole fraction (salt-f
ree basis) was observed. The results were compared with the values pre
dicted from the extended UNIQUAC models of Sander et al. and Macedo et
al. and the modified UNIFAC group-contribution model of Kikic et al.
