Abstract
A dilute magnetic fluid (MF) submitted to a static magnetic field exhi bits an optical birefringence. In a vortical flow the optical axis of the MF is modified. A measurement of this magnetic birefringence and o f the angular displacement of the optical axis is transformed into a n on-intensive and sensitive measurement of the local vorticity of the f low.
