Langerhans' cells (LC) are dendritic, antigen-presenting cells present within the epithelium of skin and mucosa, including that of the oral cavity. This article reviews the literature on the phenotypic and func tional features of oral mucosal Langerhans' cells, and speculates on o ther aspects by extrapolating from data on their epidermal counterpart s.
