Abstract
Starting from Chandrasekhar's work on ellipsoids and energy principles we follow a trail of questions which leads to (i) all possible flows that are attributable to vortex lines; (ii) the theorem that all stead y inviscid flows are states of stationary energy at fixed circulation, and (iii) a discussion of energy principles for barotropic and non-ba rotropic inviscid flows.
