In this review essay, Professor Lynn Chancer examines Nadine Strossen'
s Defending Pornography, an ''anticensorship'' response to the ''proce
nsorship'' works of Andrea Dworkin and Catharine MacKinnon that argue
feminists should rally to ban pornography due to its harmful effects o
n women; While Ms. Chancer ultimately agrees with Strossen's thesis, s
he recognizes that the MacDworkin position reflects legitimate concern
s of many women. Ms. Chancer concludes that changing the context of po
rnography, rather than banning it, is necessary to move beyond a simpl
istic ''pro'' and ''anti'' censorship debate.
