Shift multiplexing is a holographic storage method particularly suitab
le for the implementation of holographic disks. We characterize the pe
rformance of shift-multiplexed memories by using a spherical wave as t
he reference beam. We derive the shift, selectivity, the cross talk, t
he exposure schedule, and the storage density of the method. We give e
xperimental results to verify the theoretical predictions. (C) 1996 Op
