ULTRACOLD NEUTRONS - DISCOVERY AND RESEAR CH

Progress in the physics of ultracold neutrons (UCN), starting from the early experiments is reviewed. The problems dealt with the author und er the supervision of F.L. Shapiro are described. It is shown how the solution of these problems became progressively clearer and how their relation to other questions of physics were established. The present s tatus of UCN physics is reviewed and prospects are discussed.
