Cj. Jones et Ja. Dipietro, BIOLOGY AND CONTROL OF ARTHROPOD PARASITES OF HORSES, The Compendium on continuing education for the practicing veterinarian, 18(5), 1996, pp. 551
In terms of variety of species, insects can be considered the dominant
form of life on earth. The insects, mites, and ticks that parasitize
horses are discussed in this article. Because of their varied life-sty
les, arthropods are formidable opponents. In light of the resistance t
o insecticides as well as concern for the environment and the health o
f horses, it is advisable to use integrated pest-management techniques
when possible. Such techniques enlist all available control procedure
s and frequently reduce the number of chemical treatments used for art
hropod control. For example, timing nematode treatments to coincide wi
th an appropriate bot treatment period is easy if the practitioner is
aware of the periodicity of the pests.
