A new Aeromonas species, Aeromonas bestiarum sp. nov. (formerly DNA hy
bridization Group 2) is proposed based on the description of nine stra
ins, primarily of animal and environmental origins. Based on a polypha
sic approach using both phenotypic and genotypic (DNA/DNA hybridizatio
n and ribotyping) analyses, this group is proposed as a new species. A
profile of 3 biochemical tests including utilization of DL-lactate, a
cid production from D-sorbitol and utilization of urocanic acid was us
eful in differentiating Aeromonas bestiarum from the most closely rela
ted DNA hybridization groups 1 and 3.
