Abstract
A finite element formulation is given for calculating 3D electromagnet ic scattering problems. Especially, the influence of a dipole excited field on low conducting materials situated very close to the antenna w ill be discussed. The back scattering from the conducting object to th e antenna can be treated as well. Along the far boundaries of the comp utational domain, absorbing boundary conditions of second order have b een prescribed in order to avoid unphysical reflections. The formulati on described is assessed by applying it to a special problem and the s olution obtained is compared with a boundary element calculation.
