Abstract
This paper describes current research which supports improved planning and operation of the telecommunications network. A future holistic ap proach to network simulation is envisioned which would include the int eractions of network infrastructure, operating processes and software systems with investment and revenues. Near-term approaches to simulati ng and optimising network designs are reviewed and medium-term objecti ves are defined.
