Cw. Beausang et J. Simpson, LARGE ARRAYS OF ESCAPE SUPPRESSED SPECTROMETERS FOR NUCLEAR-STRUCTUREEXPERIMENTS, Journal of physics. G, Nuclear and particle physics, 22(5), 1996, pp. 527-558
The design and performance of large arrays of escape suppressed german
ium spectrometers is described. These arrays have revolutionized the g
amma-ray spectroscopic study of the atomic nucleus. The sensitivity of
the current generation of arrays is such that it is possible to study
weak features, with an intensity of 10(-5) of the total reaction cros
s section, associated with exotic phenomena at extremes of nuclear spi
n and deformation. Recent highlights of the physics of superdeformed s
tates and band termination states are briefly reviewed to give a flavo
ur of the power of these spectrometers.
