Z. Jedlinski et al., STEREOCHEMICAL CONTROL IN THE ANIONIC-POLYMERIZATION OF BETA-BUTYROLACTONE INITIATED WITH ALKALI-METAL ALKOXIDES, Macromolecules, 29(11), 1996, pp. 3773-3777
The anionic polymerization of (R)-beta-butyrolactone initiated with ei
ther 18-crown-6 complexes of a potassium alkoxide or a simple carboxyl
ate (reference initiator) proceeded with inversion of configuration. A
s a result (R)-beta-butyrolactone formed an isotactic poly((S)-beta-hy
droxybutyrate) with these initiators at room temperature. Polymerizati
on of (R,S)-beta-butyrolactone under the same conditions gave an atact
ic polymer, but at lower temperatures the predominantly syndiotactic f
orm of poly((R,S)-beta-hydroxybutyrate) was produced from the racemic
monomer.
