Vasopressin (Pitressin(R), 8-arginine vasopressin) is a potent vasocon
strictor of splanchnic arterioles. When administered by continuous int
ravenous infusion, it reduces portal blood now and pressure and is use
d in the management of bleeding esophageal varices. We describe a purp
uric and necrotic cutaneous reaction to vasopressin that occurred at l
ocations distant from intravenous catheter sites, and we review previo
us reports of similar reactions.
