Abstract
Many issues involving the diagnosis and treatment of facial nerve diso
rders continue to engender controversy and debate. This article examin
es the theory that Bell's palsy is a herpes simplex neuritis and propo
ses facial nerve decompression for recurrent palsies. The contemporary
management of herpes tester oticus, temporal bone fractures, otogenic
facial paralysis, and hemifacial spasm is reviewed.
