Extensive vascular calcification in an 8-year-old girl with perinatall
y acquired AIDS is reported. Complicating factors included cardiomyopa
thy, chronic lung disease, disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (M
AC), and wasting syndrome with total nutrition dependence. Plain abdom
inal films and CT of the abdomen immediately prior to her death reveal
ed dense calcification of major vessels. Autopsy revealed calcificatio
n in the media of most major vessels typical of HIV arteriopathy. A re
view of the literature failed to reveal a description of similar vascu
lar calcifications in pediatric AIDS.
