Abstract
Gas chromatography mass spectrometry was used to identify a dopamine m etabolite isolated from the substantia nigra of parkinsonian brain tis sue. Incubation of dopamine with monoamine oxidase B gave the same pro duct which was identified as 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetaldehyde. The stru cture of the compound was established by chemical synthesis, metastabl e ion measurement and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
