Survival of gall midge populations depends on many variables, but unfa
vourable climatic and environmental factors are particularly important
for these fragile insects. Like most animal groups, gall midges have
a number of adaptations that enhance the chances of survival of the po
pulation, but not necessarily individuals. In this paper we present ex
amples of some of the adaptations that have occurred in the gall midge
s based on our own previous work in the field and laboratory and that
of other researchers.
