The capabilities of Probe Beam Deflection (PBD) techniques for the stu
dy of ion exchange in electroactive polymers are described using three
polymer systems as examples. Measurements of PBD signal along with cy
clic voltammograms are used to investigate the ion exchange mechanism
of a polypyrrole film in 1 M HCl, and of a polyaniline film in 1 M HCl
O4. The determination of the diffusion coefficient of the exchanged sp
ecies is used to elucidate the ion exchange mechanism of a ladder poly
mer (poly(o-phenylendiamine)) in 1 M HClO4. The advantages and disadva
ntages of PBD techniques are discussed.
