Cellulose tribenzoate (CTB) has some desirable operational properties
and special interactions with alcohols. When chromatographic separatio
n is carried out at 150 degrees C, the C1-C4 alcohols have enhanced re
tention and other alcohols are eluted rapidly. Some probe molecules we
re used to characterize the chromatographic behavior of CTB by calcula
ting the adsorption enthalpy (-Delta Ha) between the sample and statio
nary phase. Separation of aliphatic alcohols was successfully performe
d on a packed column with a support (GDX) coated with CTB and temperat
ure programming improved the separation of these alcohols.
