Abstract
Pi-Conjugated poly(aryleneethynylene) type polymers (-C=Ar-C=C-Ar'-)n (Ar and/or Ar' = pyridine-2,5-diyl or alkyl-substituted arylene) synth esized by a palladium-catalysed coupling reaction are soluble in organ ic solvents and processable to make good thin films by casting, have l arge refractive index increment (DELTAn/DELTAc = 0.29-0.38), and exhib it photoluminescence as well as fairly strong third harmonic generatio n, chi(3) value of about 10(-10) esu.
