Abstract
In this paper several aspects of the luminescence emission of divalent lanthanide ions are discussed, partly based on literature data, partl y on unpublished results. The ions under consideration are Sm2+, Eu2+, Tm2+ and Yb2+ whereas the luminescence features are new optical trans itions, vibronic sidebands, photoionization, and large Stokes shift.
