Calciphylaxis, commonly seen by nephrologists, is a necrotizing skin c
ondition that may not be familiar to physicians associated with wound
healing. It often occurs when patients undergo renal dialysis although
not all patients with renal failure develop this condition. The incid
ence of calciphylaxis is unpredictable. Successful treatment is incons
istent, and mortality rates are high. The history of calciphylaxis and
its diagnosis and treatment are reviewed in this article.
