Animal confinement facilities are used to increase efficiency by capit
alizing from economy of scale. Investigations of the major health effe
cts of these facilities usually focus on the respiratory symptoms of t
heir workers. We hypothesized that injury may also be a significant he
alth issue for workers. We studied the incidence and patterns of injur
y during a 3-year period in a large, midwestern swine confinement faci
lity.
