E.P.R. studies of the Cr3+ (S = 3/2) and Fe3+ (S = 5/2) ions in the hi
gh- (II) and low- (III) temperature phases of KGaF4 are reported. The
structural phase transition close to 202 degrees C has been demonstrat
ed, using the temperature dependence of the spin-Hamiltonian parameter
s. The main mechanism of the phase transition is driven by the rotatio
n of the GaF6 octahedra around the c-axis.
