The combination of a dichlorobis(beta-diketonato)zirconium compound 1
and dimethylaluminium chloride was found to be an active catalyst for
the oligomerization of ethylene to produce linear C-4-C-22 alpha-olefi
ns. The catalytic activity and the product distribution of the resulti
ng oligomers was influenced by the structure of the beta-diketonato li
gands, which affect the electron density at the zirconium center.
