A young boy developed sixth nerve palsies at 4 1/2, 7, and 7 1/2 years
of age. The last episode was accompanied by a partial external third
nerve palsy. Variable orbital pain and a viral type illness accompanie
d each attack which cleared spontaneously with no residua within 2-8 w
eeks. This is the first reported instance of so-called 'benign idiopat
hic oculomotor palsy' with combined third and sixth nerve palsies.
