Al. Battison et al., ASCITES AND HEPATIC CIRRHOSIS IN A COCKATIEL (NYMPHICUS-HOLLANDICUS), The Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association, 32(3), 1996, pp. 237-242
A mature, female cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) was examined becaus
e of respiratory difficulties. Clinical and laboratory findings includ
ed ascites and evidence of hepatic disease (i.e., increased plasma bil
e acid concentrations, aspartate aminotransferase, and alkaline phosph
atase activities). Plasma protein electrophoresis results were consist
ent with chronic-active inflammation. The albumin-to-globulin (A:G) ra
tio, calculated from plasma electrophoresis, was 0.3. Postmortem exami
nation revealed severe hepatic fibrosis and a diffuse, interstitial, g
ranulomatous lipid pneumonia.
