Two cases of renal zygomycosis in two young healthy men who presented
with loin pain and progressive renal failure without any history of tr
auma are presented. In the first patient, kidneys were bilaterally inf
ected by a member of Mucoraceae, namely, Apophysomyces elegans. Despit
e bilateral nephrectomy, surgical debridement and antifungal therapy,
the patient died 3 months later. This infection represents the second
case of zygomycosis in India caused by A. elegans. In the second patie
nt, one kidney was infected by Rhizopus arrhizus. After nephrectomy of
the affected kidney, surgical drainage of pus and treatment with amph
otericin B, the patient recovered from the illness.
