A microstrip gas chamber (MSGC) with a semi-transparent CsI photon con
verter for the detection of single VUV photons is described. The detec
tor is sensitive to photons in the wavelength region 160 nm < lambda <
220 nm and is operated with Ar-C4H10, (90-10) as detector gas at p =
1000 mbar with a gain g similar or equal to 3 x 10(4). The back electr
ode of the MSGC is formed by a pad array allowing for two-dimensional
position determination of the incident photon. For single VUV photons
at lambda similar or equal to 172 nm a detection efficiency epsilon(to
t) similar or equal to 9% with anode readout and epsilon(tot) similar
or equal to 3.5% with pad readout could be achieved.
