ALPHA-FETOPROTEIN PRODUCTION BY A MALIGNANT MIXED MULLERIAN TUMOR OF THE UTERUS

A case of alpha-fetoprotein production by a uterine malignant mixed mu llerian tumour is described. The patient was a 68 year old woman who d eveloped intraabdominal recurrence of a stage 1 uterine tumour which h ad been treated surgically seven years previously. Her serum alpha-fet oprotein was raised at 21000 mu g/l (normal <10 mu g/l) and staining w ith immunoperoxidase confirmed that the tumour was the site of alpha-f etoprotein production. The patient was treated with combination chemot herapy but died two weeks after the first course. This is believed to be only the second such case reported.
