Extended milling of BaFe12O19 powder in air results in multiple compon
ents with evidence for: structurally disordered BaFe12O19 and alpha-Fe
2O3, a disordered/amorphous phase, and superparamagnetic relaxation ef
fects due to the fine particles. The multi-phase nature is found to re
main on annealing at 500 degrees C in air or vacuum whereas annealing
al 1000 degrees C causes crystalline BaFe12O19 with increased magnetic
coercivity to be formed.
