Ee. Robertson et al., ION-BEAM MANIPULATION OF THE PHOTOREFRACTIVE PROPERTIES OF STRONTIUM BARIUM NIOBATE PLANAR WAVE-GUIDES, Optics letters, 21(9), 1996, pp. 641-643
Photorefractive planar waveguides have been fabricated in cerium-doped
strontium barium niobate (SrxBa1-xNb2O6, SBN) single crystals by ion-
beam implantation. The losses measured were as low as 0.1 and 7.0 dB c
m(-1) for the TM and the TE modes, respectively. Subsequent two-beam-c
oupling experiments performed on the waveguides showed that, unlike fo
r BaTiO3 and KNbO3 waveguides formed by ion-beam implantation, the two
-beam-coupling gain direction did not reverse. Also, the response time
had been reduced by 2 orders of magnitude. (C) 1996 Optical Society o
