In this work, the technical aspects of laser marking using organometal
lic films of different compositions are reported. Orasols of different
types and palladium (II) acetate ave used, for the first time, to pro
duce permanent markings of various colors on different substrates. Cer
amic and plastic substrates were used. The deposition process is a pho
tothermal process and the markings were carried out using an argon ion
laser operating at lambda = 514 nm. Two laser marking techniques are
used with the orasol dyes and palladium (II) acetate. The first of the
se two techniques is mask marking, where laser light is projected onto
a workpiece through a mask replicating the information to be marked.
The second technique applied is real-lime motion marking. The workpiec
e was translated under the stationary laser beam using a programmable
stage translator. For both techniques, optimum marking parameters (sca
nning speed/exposure time, power, and deposited line width) are report
ed along with typical examples.
