On the premise that the texture image is a planar surface, we propose
a new morphological approach to obtain a 3-D surface; orientation usin
g the variation of texture image caused by projective distortions. Cen
troids of texels can be obtained from the farthest texel to the neares
t texel sequentially by recursive erosions, so a texture image is segm
ented into several sub-regions. Using major axes and sizes of structur
ing elements in segmented regions, we can compute a vanishing point an
d obtain a 3-D surface orientation. In the experiments, we have ascert
ained the proposed algorithm was more effective than the aggregation t
ransform.
