Abstract
Phosphoglycerate mutase activity and mRNA levels during maize embryo g ermination were studied. Enzyme levels, activity and mRNA were found t o be markedly increased during germination although in dry embryos pho sphoglycerate mutase was detected in the absence of mRNA. The results here reported demonstrate that the enzyme was present in dry embryos b ut new synthesis of the phosphoglycerate mutase was required to permit the progress of germination.
