A series of cyano-bridged polynuclear complexes have been prepared in
the context of intramolecular energy and electron-transfer studies. Ex
perimental results are discussed to emphasize that (i) a valence local
ized description is generally appropriate for such complexes, (ii) tim
e-resolved resonance Raman and infrared spectroscopies can be successf
ully applied to the study of the excited-state intercomponent processe
s, (iii) polynuclear species capable of supporting efficient intramole
cular energy transfer can be used for the visible sensitization of wid
e-band gap semiconductors.
