Background: Although several cases of pregnancies of traumatic spinal
cord injury patients have been reported, to our knowledge, only one ca
se has been reported detailing the perinatal outcome in a patient with
preexisting transverse myelitis. Case: The prenatal course and pregna
ncy outcome in two patients with preexisting transverse myelitis is pr
esented. The major complications encountered were urinary tract infect
ions and mobility problems. Conclusion: Patients with preexisting tran
sverse myelitis can have successful pregnancies with term vaginal deli
veries. Prevention of potential complications, such as anemia, preterm
labor and delivery, decubitus ulcers, and autonomic dysreflexia can b
e achieved with coordinated multidisciplinary management.
