ETS-1 is a cellular homologue of the viral ets oncogene of the E26 vir
us and functions as a sequence specific transcription factor. It plays
an important role in cell proliferation, differentiation, lymphoid ce
ll development, transformation, angiogenesis and apoptosis. ETS-1 may
control the expression of critical genes involved in these processes b
y binding to ets binding sites present in their transcriptional regula
tory regions. Recent progress in understanding the multiple functions
of ETS-1 is summarized in this review.
