Ds. Zrnic et A. Ryzhkov, ADVANTAGES OF RAIN MEASUREMENTS USING SPECIFIC DIFFERENTIAL PHASE, Journal of atmospheric and oceanic technology, 13(2), 1996, pp. 454-464
The following advantages of rain measurements using specific different
ial phase are examined: 1) immunity to beam blockage, 2) immunity to g
round clutter canceling, and 3) ease to isolate effects of anomalous p
ropagation. We quantify immunity to beam blockage via examples of meas
urements that corroborate theoretical expectations. Comparisons of rai
n accumulations between radar and rain gauges are included. We also co
ntrast beam-filling effects on rain estimates from reflectivity and sp
ecific differential phase.
