Fragmentation of gas-phase C-60 after 193 nm laser excitation at 300 m
J/cm(2) fluence is probed by optical emission spectroscopy. Atomic C e
mission at 247.85 nm, and Mulliken, Deslandres-D'Azambuja, and Swan ba
nds from C-2 species are observed. Time-resolved experiments reveal pr
ompt C and C-2 fragmentation on a ns time scale or less, and delayed C
-2 release on a mu s scale. The latter is a pathway for energy relaxat
ion in C-60,whereby delayed electronically excited C-2 fragments are s
ubsequently deexcited by photon emission.
