Experimental data from a turbulent optical system are analyzed quantit
atively. The system consists of a nonlinear fiber ring resonator synch
ronously driven by a train of picosecond light pulses. Spatiotemporal
dynamics reshapes the pulses and generates intricate substructure; its
complexity can be chosen through choice of parameters. We extend stan
dard procedures of time series analysis and show how a measure of the
degree of complexity can be retrieved from the data.
