Abstract
A procedure is presented for finding simple approximations of the disc rete eigenvalues of the Zakharov-Shabat scattering problem correspondi ng to the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The approximation is in the form of an interpolation formula which combines results for small eige nvalues, obtained by a direct variational approach, and for large eige nvalues, obtained by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization rule.
