APOPTOSIS IN THE ROSTRAL MIGRATORY STREAM OF THE DEVELOPING RAT

The rostral migratory stream consists of a large number of cells migra ting from the lateral ventricles to the rostral telencephalon, primari ly the olfactory bulb. The pathway continually provides neuro- and gli oblasts throughout life. The present paper indicates that a considerab le number of cells undergo apoptotic cell death en route, even in youn g (day 3) rats when presumably many vacant sites are still available i n the developing brain.
